While the pattern (originally known as boteh) has ancient Persian roots, Indian textile makers made it famous worldwide in the late 1600s when they began printing it on inexpensive cotton fabrics called bandhani. As bandhani made their way across Europe, they grew in popularity and inspired many reproductions. The most well-known reproductions came from Paisley, Scottland; they were so popular that bandanas still carry the adopted Scottish name today.
